Moving Image Dictionary

Binary Oppositions: The contrast between two mutually exclusive concepts or things that creates conflict and drives a narrative

Non Diegetic- A sound that does not exist in the ‘real world’ of the film, for example this can be the soundtrack which only the audience can hear.

Diegetic- Sounds which can be heard and seen by the characters, this adds effect, for example this is characters talking.

Rule of thirds- A guideline used within film making that divides an image into an Imagined grid. Made up of nine equal parts, which is used for the composition of visual images.

Synergy- The release of different products with films to boost the marketing campaign and films sales, for example The Lego Movie released clothing and having a section at LEGOLAND.

Convergence- Combining two or more mediums, this happens in either production, distribution and exhibition of a film, this happened with The Lego Movie when they released a theme song ‘Everything is Awesome’ and have released a video game with the film.

Horizontal Integration- One large company owning several other companies in different types of media.

Vertical Integration- When a company owns all the stages of the production, distribution and in the case of cinema exhibition of it’s products, a example of this is Warner Bros they did everything for the Lego Movie.

Above the line Costs- Are costs which the more important people are made when a film is being made, for example in The Lego Movie the above the line costs were for people such as actors including: Will Ferrell and Morgan Freeman, also these costs were for people such as the directors who are Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

Below the Line costs- Are costs which the less important people are paid during the making process of a film, for example minor people such as minor background characters in Mrs Browns Boys D’Movie are below the line costs.

Parallel Editing- A editing technique that continuously alters between two or more scenes that are happening simultaneously, but are in different locations. It is usually used to create climax or emphasise oppositional characters and character relationships.

Continuity Editing- A style of editing that is commonly used to emphasise a smooth transition of time and a logical progression through a film’s narrative.

Binary Opposition- The contrast between two opposite things which creates conflict and creates a narrative, good/bad and day/night.

Intertextuality- The influence that media texts have on each other. Result of direct or indirect cross references.
Representation- The way the media presents the world around us in the forms of signs and codes for audiences to read.

Hegemony- This means a position of power or leadership in a given situation.

Ideology- It’s a set of ideas or beliefs which are held to be acceptable by the creators of a media text. For example text may have feminist ideology, meaning it has the idea that women are the equal of men and shouldn’t be discriminated against.

Iconography- This is used to show the conventional meanings attached to certain images to help show specific meanings.

Preferred Reading- This is a meaning of text which the producers intended, the opposite is aberrant reading which is when producers deliberately interpret text to create a different meaning.
Oppositional Reading- The way audiences choose to read the text; this would happen if text is approached by an audience that it was not originally targeted for.
Archetype- A universal type of model or character that is found in many different texts, such as a loyal friend.
Stereotype- This is a representation of people that rely on preconceived ideas about that particular group, that a particular person is belonging to.

Verisimilitude- The quality of appearing to be true or depicting reality. The more the story resembles reality the easier it is for the audience to engage.

High key lighting- This aims to reduce the lighting ratio present in each scene. It’s free from dark shadows and suggests a upbeat mood.

Low key lighting- This aims to decrease the lighting ratio present in each scene, it creates a lot of dark shadows and suggest a down beat mood. Used in product advertising to make the product look better.

Contrapuntal sound- Is where the non diegetic sounds are used to contrast with the scene which is happening in the film or movie, it helps creates a twist in the scene.

Ambient Sound- Normal sound’s which exists in a particular scene or location. Such as traffic noise, in a rough location dogs would be barking which is ambient sound.

Foley- A foley artist supplies the live action sounds that a production microphone may have missed. Sounds of swords locking together, named after Jack Foley a sound editor at Universal studios.

Dramatic Irony- The irony occurring when the audience understand and see a situation while the characters are totally unaware of it .

Ellipsis- It suggests an action by showing what has happened before and after what has been observed, films use it to clear actions that add nothing to the narrative.

Props character Theory- There is traditionally a hero which is a male whose role is to restore normality by defeating the villains. The villain is the cause of the disruption and the enemy of the hero. The Dispatcher sends the hero on a journey to restore parity and well-being. The Donor gives the hero something to help him along with his journey. The helper assists the hero in restoring normal life. The Heroine is usually a vulnerable character who is threatened by the villain and needs rescuing by them. There is also a false her who is a character that initially seems to be on the hero’s side but turns against him.

Todorov’s Narrative Theory- This states that most stories or plot lines follow the same pattern or path, there are 5 steps in this pattern: 1. Equilibrium- the first part of the story will display a happy start, where the characters are content and everything is as it should be. 2. A Disruption- The 2nd part of the story will feature a problem or something will disrupt the happiness. 3. Realisation-This part of the play when everyone realises the problem and it is chaos. 4. Restored Order- This is the part of the plot when the characters attempt to repair the damage and restore the problem. 5. Equilibrium Again- This is the final part of the plat where the problem is resolved and normality can resume again.

Restricted Narrative- The story presented by one character in particular. Mystery or surprise may be the effect of this form of narrative.

Omniscient Narrative- The story presented through a number of characters, suspense may be the effect.

Linear Narrative- Is telling a story in a straight line through chronological order, starting at the beginning, moving to the middle and proceeding to the end of the story.

Episodic Narrative- The way a story is told is through a series of episodes or segments, it jumps from story to story, a soap opera on TV is an episodic program.

Diegesis- In this the narrator tells the story, the narrator presents the actions of the characters to the audience, it provides details about the world itself and experiences of characters are revealed through narrative.

Enigma Code- This is a question which is not immediately answered and draws the audiences into a specific text. For example a body is discovered at the beginning of a TV detective drama.

High concept film- This is a type of film which can be easily pitched and will be easily summarized as the idea would have been thought of before a lot of times. For example a high concept film in Jurassic park was high concept because a lot of people asked the question ‘What if we clone dinosaurs?’.

Juxtaposition- The placement of two or more opposed images on either side of an edit to create an effect.

Key Light- This is the first and usually most important light, this light is to highlight the form and dimension of the subject.

Master Shot- This type of shot is used in film to record a entire dramatized scene, from start to finish, from an angle that keeps all the characters in view, it is usually a long shot or a establishing shot.

Reaction Shot- It is a shot which cuts away from the main scene in order to show the reaction of a character.

Polysemic- The way that all images may be interpreted in a variety of different ways, the more anchorage a text is given, the less open it is to polysemy.

180 Degree Rule- It means that two characters should always have the same left and right relationship to each other, when a camera crosses the ‘axis’ connecting two subjects it is called ‘crossing the line’. The new shot is called the reverse angle.

Codes- There are different types of codes which are decoded to create meaning: Technical codes- all to do with the way a text is technically constructed. Verbal codes- Everything to do with language, either written or spoken. Symbolic codes- Codes that can be decoded on a mainly connotation level, all the things which draw upon our experience and understanding of other media texts.

Connotation- The way in which meaning is created. Connote means creating a meaning by association and creating more than one meaning.

Conglomerates- The result of mergers and takeovers, media companies are increasingly coming together in conglomerates, also called multinational co-operations.

Re Write of Doctor Who clip

Doctor Who Gender clip
During this clip of Doctor Who there are many different micro features which include: sound, editing, camera and mise-en-scene which helps present the representational issue of gender throughout the clip.

First of all the micro feature of camera is used to present the representational issue of gender. For example straight away in the first scene a extreme close up is used to represent the male characters cockiness and it tells the audience who has the power in the clip, furthermore a Steadicam is used within the clip which shows the female character Martha walking to the male character through all of the other minor characters in this scene this juxtaposes with the non-diegetic sound because this is very down beat music which symbolises the current mood which is being portrayed within the clip. In the micro feature of camera high and low angled shots are used which represents the difference between the powerful and weaker characters in the clip. A good example of this is at the beginning of the clip high angles are used on the female character Martha to portray her as week and low angled shots are used on male characters to portray them as more dominant compared to the female characters which is a good use of the hegemonic norms that male characters are the more dominant ones. However this switches further on in the clip as high shots are used on  the male characters whereas the low shots are used on the female characters which represents a switch in authority the longer the clip goes on and ultimately go against television series hegemonic norms. Further on in the clip a eye line match is used between Martha the female character and the master who is the main male character in the scene. This is used to signify a switch in power in the scene because this is used when Martha’s diegetic such as her speech becomes a lot more confident. lastly when Martha does become confident in the scene because she is ultimately defeating the master a extreme close up is used to signify victory, this is a role reversal because the camera shot was used the same way as it was used right at the beginning of the clip for the male character when he was a lot more confident and had more overall power within the scene.

The next significant micro feature which is used throughout the Doctor Who clip is mise-en-scene this feature includes all the characters costumes, positions and all the different types of lighting throughout the scene. First of all the main male character the master is wearing a basic suit which follows the stereotype of men as a suit is a stereotypical masculine outfit, whereas in contrast the main female character Martha Jones is wearing a leather jacket which signifies a type of role reversal as the female character is wearing a more masculine outfit compared to the male character. Another significant factor within the micro feature of mise-en-scene is lighting which is used to help present the mode of address within the scene, for example low key lighting is used at the beginning of the clip to represent the down beat mode of address which juxtaposes with the storyline because the evil villain is more dominant and winning the verbal battle, however when battle switches and  the good characters start to win it they become more dominant this again juxtaposes with the lighting because it goes to high key lighting to represent the break through and how well they are doing. The last main aspect of mise-en-scene is the characters positioning within the clip, this is used very well to represent gender. For example near the beginning of the clip the female character is positioned on her knees to signify the dominance the male character has and the order of hierarchy which the characters have is being displayed, however in juxtaposition with the lighting the order of hierarchy and dominance switches when the male doctor grows and becomes dominant again as a result the master s placed in a position of struggle as he is slowly falling down the stairs with his hands out to try and help him balance more.

The next major micro feature which is used throughout the clip is editing this is significantly used throughout the clip to help represent the issue of gender. For example at the very beginning of the clip the master has a lot more screen time which shows the audience that he has authority and is the dominant character within the particular scene, in comparison Martha the female character in the scene has a lot less screen time which signifies the difference in dominance in the clip, this also juxtaposes with pace of the overall editing of the scene because it is a lot slower at the beginning compared to what it is near the end. In contrast near the end of the scene Martha has a lot more screen time compared to the master which symbolises the switch in power within the clip, this again juxtaposes with the overall editing of the scene because the pace of it drastically increases and it jumps around from character to character considerably more compared to what it did. Furthermore parallel editing is used to help the clip alter between the different flashbacks which explains the narrative and helps the audience understand how Martha started to gain some dominance and authority within the clip.

The last micro feature which is used in the clip to help represent the issue of gender is sound, this includes all the non-diegetic, diegetic and ambient sounds within the clip. First of all the non-diegetic which is used is very down beat and juxtaposes and supports the mode of address and the scenes narrative, throughout the clip the mode of address changes so the non-diegetic music also changes to juxtaposes with this and make the whole scene become more upbeat for the audience. Another feature of sound in the clip is the diegetic which include all the characters lines. Quotes such as ‘kneel’ is in a dominant and authoritive tone from the male character to the female characters which represents the dominance the male character has in this particular scene. However further on in the narrative Martha starts laughing at him and explaining what she had done and the more she explains the more cocky and arrogant her voice of tone becomes, this symbolises and represents the switch in power because the more dominant character has a cocky and arrogant voice of tone which they both have just at different time periods in the clip. Another feature of sound is ambient sound which includes all the minor background noises. For example Foley is used to help over emphasise sounds which includes the ticking clock which helped portray them as being in a lot of danger, however it is also used when ‘doctor’ is being said all over the world to add more emphasises over the fact that they are winning.

In conclusion all the micro features which are being used within the doctor who clip allow the representational issue of gender to be portrayed in a very unique and subtle way. For example editing and camera are very basic however are very effective in this clip. Whereas sound and mis-en-scene is more complex however has the same outcome as it helps portray the representational issue of gender even more.

Re Write of Downton Abbey clip and production and distribution of film

The extract of Downton Abbey uses the microfeatures of camera, editing, sound and mis-en-scene to help represent class and status in a very unique way. First of all the cinematographer pans the camera up the boys bike and then makes it zoom out leaving a establishing shot of a poor lower classed child riding his tatty old big into this huge, expensive grand house, this is significant because it shows the audience the contrast between the two different ways of life. The cinematographer then moves the camera to show one of his lordships daughters looking down on the boy through a bird’s eye view shot which then juxtaposes through a jump cut to show the two scenes which are happening at the same time. As the camera angle is very high this means its looking down on the lower class boy that represents the fact that the higher classed girl is looking down on to the lower classed boys. This scene is also significant in the fact that the girl doesn’t have to work for all the money and wealth she has whereas the little poor boy has to work for every little penny that he gets. This shows the importance of class and status and how it helps these particular characters to have an easy or a hard life. Every time a lower classed character is speaking to a upper classed character the camera looks down on them the cinematographer has done this to identify the vast contrast between status and class of certain characters. In the scene where his lordship and her ladyship is talking there is a use of cross-cutting to show the expression on both their faces when they are in deep conversation about Titanic and its survivors. Furthermore the camera person zoom’s the camera in on them both in this scene to an extreme close-up to show the audience their deep expressions on their faces in even more detail. To help the audience distinguish between the lower and upper class characters in this particular scene, the diegetic sound when the individual characters are talking is very different , for example when the maids are talking they speak with a very broad northern accent which could be associated with either being local and stereotypically lower educated so as a result would mean they are lower classes characters, whereas the more upper classed characters speak with a more educated and sophisticated accent which shows the audience that they have more stature and etiquette compared to the lower classed characters. Furthermore to add to this when the main characters are speaking the non-diegetic sound is a lot slower and the music is classical to show how they are more grand and superior. A good example of this is the scene with his lordship walking down the grand staircase which is over exaggerated through the use of the non-diegetic soundtrack this represents how he is far superior to other characters. The quote ‘poor devils below deck’ is very significant in the sense that only the rich and upper classed people on board the Titanic had a chance of surviving due to their wealth and superiority. Furthermore the use of the word poor also shows that everyone is distinguished between whether they are wealthy or not rather than on personal things such as a individuals personality. When one of the main daughters arrive on scene she starts of by saying ‘morning pappa’ this represents the way each individual character is speaking because at the same time she is handing his lordship a telegram this helps suggest she can’t ask him any questions about the telegram, whereas in scenes with the lower class workers a girl roughly around the same age is continuously asking questions about what certain things are about and why they are done in particular ways. Mis-en-scene means everything which is in a particular scene. In the extract of Downton Abbey many props, costumes and lighting has constructed for many different set purposes. First of all the lower classed women characters have to wear scruffy maid outfits as they don’t deal with upper classed characters such as his lordship. Whereas the lower classed men wear basic suits which symbolises that they deal with more upper classed characters and also it represents the era they are living in because men have superiority over women meaning they have to dress more formally. This is fairly similar for his lordship in the sense that he is dressed and up to run the grand house whereas her ladyship is still in her night gown lying in bed. Furthermore the workers have to deal carefully with the expensive props such as silver cutlery whereas his lordship doesn’t take any care when dealing with it as he knows through his wealth and superiority he could easily replace it if something got broken whereas the workers couldn’t as they couldn’t afford to replace it. When the workers are presented in the scene the lighting is usually a lot darker compared to when the main characters are shown, this had been done by the cinematographer because it easily helps the audience identify the huge difference between class and status in the range of characters. When the servants and maids are working the editing is very fast paced and shown through a linear narrative to show the audience what happens on a day to day basis, whereas the linear narrative is a lot slower when the main characters are presented as they are just waking up and arriving at the breakfast table. This is a use of treatment because it has been constructed like this because it represents the contrast between lower class people having to work really hard for their money whereas the higher classed people don’t. The fact her ladyship is presented still in her night gown is a use of the male gaze as the audience views her in a sexual and innocent way. In conclusion I feel that the clip has been constructed in a way that the audience can easily identify the huge differences and divide between different classes and the importance of statuses. This is because the clip is just a shorter representation of the major accident in Titanic which it references to throughout the scene, this is significant because the it shows that no matter what status or class you are if something major happened like in the Titanic nothing could help save you. Furthermore the audience are made to feel sorry for the lower classed people whereas they gain respect for the upper classed characters as they are able to view their emotions and superiority though the use of all the micro features.
 Production of a film is a very complicated process; this involves many different procedures and components such as: editing, producing, filming and recruiting all the right staff to fulfil the particular roles. Distribution is how a film is sold and marketed to its target audience. In this essay I am going to be talking about how my case studies did this and comparing how successful they both were at it. My first case study is warner bros animation The Lego Movie, as this is a motion animated film most of the production involved creating and use new computer generated imagery. Warner bros had to do this through creating a new software called Lego digital designer as Warner bros is one of Hollywood’s top six olipology’s they have the finance to be able to fund new technologies such as this, which will be able to improve films use of CGI for the future. Furthermore through the use of digital designer over 3 million virtual bricks were made for the film sets, which is the greatest amount ever made for a Lego film. Also as Warner bros animation is such a huge film production company they could afford to pay huge stars such as: Will Ferrel, Liam Nesson and Morgan Freeman to play main characters in the film which helped increase the films inconography because using this sort of star power helps fans identify what sort of film it is going to be through the types of actors who will be in it which helps sell the film to fans. Lastly as Warner bros is a American film making company they identified a gap in the market for a Lego based children’s comedy film before production of the actual film started which helped the directors get a key identity for the film which they could work towards a lot easier. Furthermore my other case study BBC Films Mr’s Browns Boys D’Movie was produced in a very different way. As it was a already a popular television series they know there was a gap for this type of film in the market and that it would be successful as they already had a key fans base. As it’s a British film it stayed close to its roots and was filmed in the same location in Dublin, Ireland as the television series was. Furthermore as the cast knew the main person behind Mrs Brown in Brendan O’Carroll they knew what it was like to work with him meaning getting the full cast of actors was a fairly simple job. lastly as it’s a fairly British film they filmed it on a typical digital camera meaning costs were down, production time was down and the production quality of the film was a lot higher as they could easily re-do scenes as the director was watching what was being recorded on a screen and could decide their and then if it was good enough. Which is a unique selling point for the film as these ‘deleted scenes’ were actually still used in the main film as it adds a type of normality to the film fairly similar to the way the television series used deleted scenes rather than deleting them they just re-did them. Furthermore BBC Films Mr’s Browns Boys D’Movie and Warner Bros The Lego Movie had very different budgets. First of all Warner Bros The Lego movie had an estimated $60,000,000 budget which it stayed in mainly by saving a lot of money because of the digital aspect of the Lego movie it saved thousands of dollars, most of the money for production was spent on actors and advertising for the film. This is also fairly similar to Mrs Brown’s Boys; this is because of the family cast which saved the film a lot of money however it had a much smaller budget of an estimated £3.6 million pounds for the film which it stayed in. As BBC films Mrs Brown’s boys D’Movie used the same cast an directors and writers the above the line costs were very restricted meaning these were kept whereas their below the line costs increased drastically due to the increase in minor crew members such as more make-up artists being needed for more minor actors etc. In contrast Warner bros animation’s The Lego Movie’s above the line cost were significantly greater compared to their below the line costs mainly because of the fact that they used star power to help sell the film, if stars such as: Will Ferrell or Morgan Freeman weren’t added to the cast list the above the line costs may have been less. The distribution of my case study Warner bros animation The Lego Movie was a lot greater through the use of synergy and convergence compared to my other case study BBC Films Mr’s Browns Boys D’Movie. First of all synergy is the release of products to go with films marketing campaigns. Warner bros did this greatly through the release of: mini figures of characters, themed events around the world, actual sets of the film were released and recreated, costumes of main characters, a clothing range, eight limited edition cups were released with every McDonalds happy meal to appeal to one there target audiences of children and also they have a devoted section at the LEGOLAND theme park all about the Lego Movie which helps sell the film greatly to the target audience. As Warner bros is a American production company all this would have been planned before the release and even start of the production of the film. Whereas my other case study BBC Films Mr’s Browns Boys D’Movie only used synergy to help sell the film in a very minor way compared to Warner bros as they released a small range of products such as: a clothing range, costumes and small toys such as little dolls of the main characters to help sell the film to their target audience. This may have been due to the fact thatBBC Films Mr’s Browns Boys D’Movie is a British film whereas Warner Bros The Lego Movie but also it could be because BBC Films Mr’s Browns Boys D’Movie is more aimed towards adults as it’s a comedy whereas The Lego Movie is a children’s comedy meaning to appeal to them a lot more synergy products would have to be released a lot more. The next step of distribution is convergence this is the release of products on many different media platforms. BBC films Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie used this to appeal to their target audience however not to a great effect, for example they have released: a soundtrack of the film on CD and on websites such as YouTube and Spotify, an autobiography of the main star Brendan O’Carroll was released where he talks about the film in great detail, lastly videos of the premiere and production of the film was released on sites such as YouTube to help sell the film. In comparison my other case study Warner Bros the Lego Movie took the use of convergence to a whole new level. They released a video game on platforms such as PlayStation and Xbox to help the film appeal to their particular target audience, videos of the main actors were released of them talking about their characters, a soundtrack was released of the films non diegetic on sites such as YouTube and Spotify, an application is available to download which allows the target audience to play Lego Movie based games and find out as much information about the film as possible. Furthermore a theme song was released called ‘Everything is Awesome’ which follows all the films ethics and thoughts of the film. This particular song has been re-released by many different up and coming artists both professional and amateurs which is a good use of cross-media convergence because it un-intently helps promote and sell the film. Furthermore The Lego Movie had two main distributors these were: Warner bros pictures and Roadshow Entertainment. Warner bros pictures are an American producer of film have been very successful over the years and have distributed many famous films such as Harry Potter and Sesame Street. Furthermore Roadshow Entertainment is part of the Australian media company Village Roadshow; they have helped distribute many films such as the terminator and First Blood. Mrs Browns Boys D’Movie had one main distributor Universal Pictures which like Warner bros it is classed as one of Hollywood’s big six distributors. They have distributed many famous films including Jaws and E.T. Mrs Browns Boys had the premier in the Savoy cinema in the capital of Ireland Dublin this was to show that it hadn’t forgotten its original Irish roots which is a huge USP for the film. In contrast Warner bros animation’s The Lego Movie was first released in Copenhagen were the premier was held, this is because of the history of Lego and Denmark. The first pieces of Lego were first made in Denmark so the film about of Lego would more than defiantly first be shown there. The Lego movie was released in most countries on either the 6th of 7th of February. This was because the countries released in first used the same characters meaning only subtitles were imported from the English version whereas the later releases of the film had new voices for the main characters. In conclusion it is very easy to see the huge difference between American and British films. American ones are usually produced and distributed through one major company, Warner bros animation is a prime example of this as they have produced and distributed the Lego Movie purely on their own which is called horizontal integration. Whereas BBC Films had to have Universal pictures help to distribute the film which is a use of vertical integration. This shows how American films have the facilities, money and capabilities to fulfil everything which is required to have a successful film. Whereas British films have to sell their films to distribution companies to help complete the film making process. As a result this means the distribution of American films is a lot greater compared to the British films as the distribution of the film is usually thought of before the film is made whereas British film do that after the films is produced meaning lesser amounts of money are available to be made. Thisis the exact case for my case studies Warner bros animation The Lego Movie and BBC Films Mrs Browns Boys D’Movie.

Discuss the importance of cross media convergence and synergy in production, distribution and marketing?
Different levels of cross media convergence and synergy can greatly effect a films production, distribution and marketing. Warner Bros animation are a big conglomerate and when they released The Lego Movie (Lord and Miller, 2014) all of the films, levels of production, distribution and marketing benefited greatly from cross media convergence and synergy which is a good representation of how significant it is to big conglomerates such as Warner bros. Whereas the independent institutions such as BBC films don’t really see a huge importance in cross media convergence and synergy in production, distribution and marketing. For example when BBC films released Mrs Browns Boys D’Movie (Kellet, 2014), they didn’t really pursue and identify the importance in cross media convergence and synergy in production, distribution and marketing as they didn’t really use these factors to try and help promote their film. This represents how important cross media convergence and synergy is to big conglomerates rather than independent institutions.
First of all as The Lego Movie (Miller and Lord, 2014) is a franchise of actual Lego the films production benefited greatly from this. For example a Lego digital designer was produced to help create the millions of virtual Lego bricks which were needed to create the film. Each individual Lego brick which was created had to have real life effects such as scratches and dents to make them seem more realistic. This is a good example of how The Lego Movie benefited and were able to identify the importance of synergy to help the film have another major unique selling point and to help the film look as authentic as possible. Whereas in contrast my other case study the independent institution of BBC films benefited from convergence in a very different way because their film Mrs Browns Boys D’Movie (Kellet, 2014) already had their own television series which means as a result the film already had a existing fan base which was pivotal in allowing the film to generate a certain amount of sales.

Furthermore through the distribution and marketing aspects of Warner Bros The Lego Movie (Miller and Lord, 2014) promotional campaign benefited greatly from cross media convergence and synergy. First of all because Warner Bros animation is a American film company they identified that the marketing and distribution of the film is the most important aspect, which enables them to see the huge gap in the market and which ways will be the most successful. For the films synergy they decided to use major things such as: Lego themed events around the world, actual sets of the film was released to allow fans to buy and make the sets, they have a devoted section to the film at the theme park called Lego land, a clothing range was released,  costumes of the main characters were released, mini-figures of the characters were released, lastly The Lego Movie and Warner bros also partnered up with McDonalds and released eight limited edition Lego movie cups with every Happy Meal to help the film appeal and be sold to the main target audience. Doing this much synergy benefited the film greatly as it made over $300 million at the box office and become one of the year’s biggest grossing films for 2014 which again was another way they sold the film as word of mouth spread about how good it was because of how much they made at the box office. Whereas the independent institution of BBC films and their film Mrs Browns Boys D’Movie (Kellet, 2014) only used a variety of forms of synergy to help sell the film to their target audience this includes: a calendar, a range of costumes and a small range of clothing. This is a lot smaller amount of synergy used by BBC films compared to the amount used by Warner Bros animation. However Mrs Browns Boys D’Movie still made over £200 million in sales at the box office and was deemed a commercial success. This represents that synergy isn’t as important for smaller independent films as it is for big conglomerates because synergy is one of the main features which helps the conglomerates sell the a film.

During the marketing and distribution of films cross media convergence can have a huge impact on how successful a film is at the box office. For example the big conglomerate Warner Bros animation used a huge amount of cross media convergence to help with the release of their film The Lego Movie (Miller and Lord, 2014) this includes: a video game which was released along with the film, a soundtrack which was released on many different media platforms, YouTube clips of the main stars talking about the film and their characters where released, lastly a theme song called ‘Everything is Awesome’ was released which helped promote the key ethics of the film, furthermore this song was also re-released by different artists which was a good use of cross media convergence which didn’t cost The Lego Movie anything however it helped promote the film. However In contrast the independent institution of BBC films and their film Mrs Browns Boys D’Movie didn’t use half as much cross media convergence to help sell the film to their target audiences. They only used a limited amount of convergence which includes: an autobiography of the main star Brendan O’Carroll talking about the film production and being distribution, also a soundtrack of the film was released on different media platforms, lastly again YouTube videos of the production of the film was released. This explains the difference between the two different types of institutions and the way they use convergence to help sell the film.


In conclusion I feel institutions using synergy and cross media convergence in a films production, distribution and marketing is vitally important to a film’s success. Big conglomerates such as Warner bros animation are very good at using them both, in the process of a films production, distribution and marketing which leads to the huge success of nearly every film that they release and the continued growth of Hollywood and the strong force of the film production oligopoly. Whereas the smaller independent institutions not being as effective with it all will lead to the nearly the same outcome for most the films they produce, distribute and market which is normally failure and as a result will never be able to compete with Hollywood and gain some of the market share.

During the Finger smith clip the representational issue of sexuality is significant throughout it. The different micro features of: camera, editing, sound and mise-en-scene allows the audience to identify the representational issue which is significant and represented throughout the clip.
The first significant micro-feature I am going to be talking about is camera, many different camera shots and movements are used to help represent the issue of sexuality throughout the clip. For example the first camera shot which is used by the cinematographer was a over the shoulder shot this is significant because it connotate’s that they are both equal because of their gender however one of the women is always helping the other, this is significant to help the audience understand the relationship between the two characters. The next significant camera shot which is used is a low shot which looks up to the two women in bed while one of them runs her hand over her body. This is significant because it is the first time the male gauze is used this is because it helps over sexualise the mode of address and represent that it is a dirty scene which at the time was forbidden unless it was a man and women who was married. Furthermore the next significant camera shot which is used is a high angle shot which shows the man looking down on the more vulnerable women, this follows the hegemonic norms because the man has more dominance and power in the scene. Furthermore close ups and jump cuts are used by the cinematographer through a shot/reverse shot to show the audience one of the women’s facial expressions which juxtaposes with a close up of the other women’s cleavage. This connotate’s to the audience the lust one of the women has for the other and helps represent their homosexual feelings for each other to the audience. The last significant camera shot which is used is a mid shot of the women and the man behind a tree this is significant because it shows the two characters doing sexual things such as the man taking of her glove and licking the female characters hand, however because it is happening between a male and a female this is a use of ideology because it is a idea which was more acceptable the time that the Finger smith clip was set.
The next micro feature which was used within the clip which I am going to discuss is mise-en-scene this feature has been constructed with very good treatment as it significantly helps their clip represent the issue of sexuality. First of the lighting varies throughout the clip to suggest and create different meanings. For example at the beginning of the clip low key lighting is used to suggest a down beat sexual mood this juxtaposes with the dirty mirror which symbolises and represents their personalities because the mirror is dirty like their character. Furthermore a good example of low key lighting being used was when the women hovered her hands over the other women’s body because the lighting was dark this suggests that the particular act was against social conformity and forbidden because they were two women and not married. In contrast high key lighting is used in the next scene as it is mid day a stereotypical less sexual part of the day and one the women is still thinking about her in a sexual way and it is showing the linear narrative of the clip. Furthermore another aspect in the micro feature of mise-en-scene is the characters costumes. These are significant as they help represent sexuality in a very unique way. For example the two women are wearing very revealing costumes for the 18th century whereas the man in the scene is wearing a formal suit which shows he is following the social society rules but the women don’t as they want to look beautiful and appeal to each other. This again is a use of the mal gauze because the mode of address is a lot more sexual as they are scene in a more sexual way compared to if they were wearing less revealing and sexual costumes. Furthermore in the scene were the man takes the women’s glove off and starts licking her hand in a sexual way is also significant to the representational issue of sexuality because they both start heavy breathing and he is holding her neck in a sexual way which could imply a form of sexual activity such as rape because it’s something which the audience sympathises with her about because she doesn’t really want to be doing it. This scene also follows the hegemonic norms of social conformity because he has the physical and mental power to put her in this situation.
The next micro feature is sound this is all the diegetic, non-diegetic and ambient sounds which are used throughout the clip to help represent the issue of sexuality a lot more to the audience. Straight away non- diegetic sound is used by the main female character in the form of a voiceover where she says ‘you look so beautiful’ this is significant because it helps the audience understand the relationship between the two women as one of them sees her as beautiful. Furthermore slow pace stringed music is non diegetic sounds which are used to heighten the sense of sexual desire which exists between the female characters relationship. However in contrast in the next scene a diegetic sound of the main female character screaming is used however it is masked by the man’s hand this is significant because it connotate’s he is more physical and also he has more dominance over her. This also links to the non-diegetic sounds because the classical music is more upbeat compared to before which represents and signifies the current situation and it tells the audience the possible dangers which the female characters could be about to face. This is a good use of binary opposites because the sexual scene at the beginning has slower and more relaxed non diegetic’s however the scene which isn’t sexualised as much has more upbeat non-diegetic sounds. Lastly ambient sounds such as birds signing and sound bridges are used to help add a significant effect to the scene as it is made more peaceful and relaxing. 
Furthermore the last micro feature which is used within the clip is editing which is used to help represent the issue of sexuality. In every scene in the clip which includes the women the editing is a lot slower whereas in contrast the scene which includes the man the editing is a lot quicker. This is significant because it helps represent the difference between the two different genders and their sexual relationships with each other. For example the main female character’s editing is a lot slower because she has lust and deep love for the other women whereas the man’s editing is a lot quicker because he is trying to get married and have a sexual relationship for other reasons than just pure love and emotion. Furthermore the editing technique of a dissolve fade is used on two occasions which has been done to show implied connections between the two scenes. For example the first time the dissolve fade is used it the first scene is about the main female character thinking about the other women in a sexual way and the scene it connects with through the technique is when she hovers her hands over the other women’s body again in a sexual way which is the main connection between the two scenes. These are significant and are presented as being connected because they both include the main women thinking homosexually about the other women. This forbidden because the time the clip was set in was a very homophobic and metrosexual period in time. Adding to this the editing technique of ellipsis editing of the narrative sequence is used by the editor to link it with the ambient, non-diegetic and diegetic sounds throughout the clip, this adds effect to certain scenes and makes it seem more dramatic to the audience.


In conclusion all the micro features which are used in the Finger smith clip helps imply and present the representational issue of sexuality. The micro features of camera, editing, sound and mise-en-scene all has connotations and helps support the mode of address. These have all been constructed and treated in this way to help represent the issue of sexuality.

‘Issues Raised by new technologies that have been introduced at production, marketing and exchange’

New technologies within film create many different issues and greatly influence all the different aspects of film. New technologies effect both big and small film company’s production, distribution, exhibition and exchange when realising a new film. For example big conglomerates such as Warner bros animation were able to really use new technologies to help with their film The Lego Movie’s (Lord and Miller, 2014)  production, distribution exhibition and exchange to help really sell their film and make it appeal to the target audience. Whereas smaller film companies such as BBC Films can’t compete with this, for example BBC film’s Mrs Browns Boys D’Movie (Kellet, 2014) was unable to benefit from new technologies in the films production, distribution, exhibition and exchange as much as Warner Bros could with The Lego Movie.

‘The Importance of cross media Convergence and synergy in production, distribution and marketing’

Different levels of cross media convergence and synergy can greatly effect a films production, distribution and marketing. Warner bros animation are a big conglomerate and when they released The Lego Movie (Miller and Lord, 2014) all the films levels of production, distribution and marketing benefited greatly from cross media convergence and synergy which represents how important it is to big conglomerates such as Warner Bros. Whereas the independent Institutions such as BBC Films don’t really see a importance in cross media convergence and synergy in production, distribution and marketing. For example when BBC films released Mrs Browns Boys D’Movie (Kellet, 2014) they didn’t really peruse and identify the Importance of cross media Convergence and synergy in production, distribution and marketing as they didn’t really use these factors to try and help promote their film. This shows how important cross media convergence and synergy is to big conglomerates rather than independent institutions.

‘Issues Raised by media ownership in contemporary media practice’

In film there are many different issues raised by media ownership in contemporary media practice this includes: Issues with new technologies, issues with synergy and convergence and issues with production, distribution, exhibition and exchange. My case studies are big versus small film companies; the big conglomerate I have chosen is Warner bros animation and their film The Lego Movie (Lord and Miller,2014) which benefited greatly from contemporary media practices, whereas my other case study the independent institutions in BBC films and their film Mrs Browns Boys D’Movie (Kellet, 2014) didn’t really benefit from contemporary media practices in their whole campaign which includes production, distribution, exhibition and exchange. Which I feel has made a huge divide between global conglomerates and independent institutions which is a huge issue in film.

What are the issues raised in the targeting of national and local audiences (British) by international and global institutions?


There are many different issues which are raised by production companies aiming films at either local or global audiences; here I am going to explain how this has been done with my two case studies.

My two case studies are Warner bros Animation’s The Lego Movie and BBC Films Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie. First of all as Warner bros animation is one of Hollywood’s top six conglomerates which suggests that they are a huge global institution which means they make films they would target at national audiences while BBC Films is a British independent production company and would make films which would target local audiences.

To help do this both my case studies produced and distributed very different types of films in The Lego Movie and Mrs Browns Boys D’Movie. First of all Warner bros animation The Lego Movie was a high budget, high concept film which was always going to be distributed to the mass international audiences. Whereas BBC Films Mrs Browns Boys D’Movie was made to reflect and create social realism which appeals to a more local target audience. 

First of all Warner bros The Lego Movie had huge financial backing which meant they had huge above the line and below the line costs, the above the line costs for The Lego movie includes costs for stars such as Will Ferrell, Morgan Freeman and Liam Neeson whereas Mrs Browns Boys didn’t have half as much as they only had a budget of £3.6 million compared to The Lego Movies budget of over $200 million.

The Lego Movie was released on February the 7th 2014 in the UK this was done just in time for February Half term at schools meaning its main target audience in families had time to go and watch the film also and the film was screened in millions of countries around the world, however after the 7th of Feb there was still more screenings to come because other countries couldn’t use the subtitles they needed the whole script to be read done by new actors speaking their native language, whereas BBC Films Mrs Browns Boys D’Movie was released on the 27th of June 2014 and was only released in English. This shows the huge difference between a distribution company thinking about when it should be released to most engage its target audience compared to just producing and distributing it as quickly as possible and it only appeals to local audiences rather than global ones.

During the distribution phase of both the films they both had huge advertising campaigns however due to the fact Warner bros uses horizontal integration they own all of the stages of a film making process which means they have full control over what they do to produce and distribute the film which is important because it means that they are able to plan how they are going to advertise and market certain films before the actual script for the film is finalised, whereas because BBC Films uses vertical integration they use a different company to do the distribution phase of the film which means a film has to be made before any thoughts can go into distribution and marketing. For example during the distribution of Warner bros The Lego Movie they released a normal television trailer for the film however they paid huge sums of money to ITV to transform a whole prime time advertising slot into actual Lego through the same Lego digital designer the film used which helped promote the film and the Lego brand however without the financial backing they wouldn’t have been able to do this. This helps show the difference between global institutions trying to advertise their films and independent institutions trying to sell their film to more local audiences.

Both the films used old fashioned posters and billboards to help try and advertise and sell the film during the distribution phase, both of the posters showed what the film was about and how the main characters were within the film which shows how both types of production companies identify good clear posters as an important way of targeting and selling their film to different types of audiences.

The premiers of the films helped the exhibition aspect of the two films , first of all Mrs Browns Boys had the premier for the film in the Savoy cinema in the capital of Ireland Dublin, this was done to show that it hadn’t forgotten its original Irish roots which is a huge unique selling point for the film. In contrast the high budget American film of The Lego Movie was first released in Copenhagen were the premier was held, this is because of the history of Lego and Denmark. The first pieces of Lego were first made in Denmark so the film about of Lego would more than defiantly first be shown there.

Synergy was used in a very creative way by Warner bros to help promote the film and help it appeal to global audiences.  For example Lego themed events were held in many different shops across the globe to raise awareness of the film and promote the brand of Lego. Next McDonalds released eight limited edition cups which came with every happy meal to also help raise awareness of the film and its characters, also costumes and clothing of particular characters were released, all of this helps The Lego Movie appeal to international and global audiences. BBC Films Mrs Browns Boys D’Movie is really different however also has many similarities. For example synergy was used in a very creative way such as: products such as a calendar of actions shots from the film has been released, a fancy dress costume of the main character Agnes Brown has been released and lastly many T-shirts with the Mrs Browns logo or picture have been released to promote the film and help it appeal to local audiences.

Furthermore the fact Warner bros is a global institution they can afford to really go crazy on the convergence side of distribution for example a video game of The Lego Movie was released, many different videos on YouTube were released of the main cast talking about their particular characters to help the audience gain a better understanding of them, lastly a theme song was released this is called ‘Everything is Awesome’ this helps show the ethics of the film and that you should think positive on life no matter what the circumstances. This was also used in cross media convergence because many different artists re-released the theme tune. Whereas in the local institution of BBC Films Mrs Browns Boys D’Movie convergence was used but on a lot smaller scale mainly due to the fact that they didn’t have the financial backing to do things such as this, but also they didn’t need to do as much to appeal to their local target audience whereas The Lego Movie needed too, to appeal to their global audiences.

In conclusion I feel that both the global institution in Warner bros  animation with the Lego Movie and the local institution in BBC Films with Mrs Browns Boys D’Movie are both very good at targeting their desired audience, for example through the use of distribution and things such as Synergy The Lego Movie are able to appeal to their international audiences whereas through social realism Mrs browns boys is able to appeal to local audiences.

Coming down the Mountain summer 2012 clip Representation of Disability.


During the scene of Coming down the Mountain, the representational issue of disability is clearly presented through the many different micro features, this are sound, editing, camera and mis-en-scene.

First of all a long take is used and the cinematographer makes the camera fade in so the actual shot gradually and smoothly appears on the screen also the previous shot dissolves away to the next scene. Furthermore continuity editing is used which is connected to the diegetic because it tries to kind of recreate what has already happened.  This then moves on to a eye-line match to show the main character starring at his disabled brother which represents how much his brother is a burden and annoyance to him.

Linear narrative is used to present the audience with what is happening in the scene which is displayed through the use of montage editing which has juxtaposition of seemingly unconnected images to create a particular meaning and help support what is being said in the diegetic.

The next scene is set in the kitchen because it involves a stereotypical family eating their breakfast as it is a fairly slow paced scene it is viewed by the audience through a long take as the same shot is used for a long duration.  When action starts to happen in this scene such as the brother trying to reach for his brothers Weetabix the shot then speeds up through the use of a short take because the shot is only used by the cinematographer for a short period of time.  This signifies the early money rush that a stereotypical family would face however the editing speed is a lot slower when the disable boy is in the scene which tries to explain how he is unique and different compared to normal people.  

This next scene uses a cross cut to show the food and the two brothers talking about pigs and Ben telling his disabled brother about how they kill pigs. The editing technique of a jump cut is used by the cinematographer to show how the disabled brother tries to eat pork in a sausage and then gets put off it because of what his brother is saying which then ultimately builds tension before the dad steps in.

This scene is showing the audience the two boys at the bus stop waiting for the bus. It uses short takes for this so the audience views a range of different things which the disable brother does in a short period of time, this is a good use of montage editing by the editor because it shows a juxtaposition of unconnected images such as playing with toys which represents to the audience how annoying the disable boy is to his brother can be. Furthermore an eye line match is used to show Ben’s daily perspective on his disable brother which presents the audience with how annoying he is to his brother.

When the two boys are sat at the bus stop continuity editing is used to support the diegetic of one of brothers which is ‘being dragged off to an old pervs sex dungeon’ continuity editing is you used to try and give the audience a false impression about one of the minor characters in the scene.

In the next scene the speed of the scene is very slow which makes the audience the feel connected and are able to relate to the boy bored at the back of a history classroom, this represents how he is just a ordinary school boy, however when more action is used in the scene match on action is used to show the how continuity of space and time is being more emphasised.

In the scene of the boys talking about the party the match on action is very faced because this juxtaposes what the party will be like, however when the cameraman decided to point the camera at the disable brother the match on action decreases in speed which represents how boring the night would be if he decided to spend the night ‘babysitting’ his disabled brother.

When the disabled boy is on the bus a long take is used to show the audience his surroundings on the bus, as his calmly sat on the bus other kids his age are pushing, shoving, fighting and generally just being loud  which represents the difference between the types of people. He is scared and frightened of what might happen because of his disability whereas normal kids aren’t scared of anything. A cutaway is used to show a grown adult character sat on the bus; this is done again to show another huge contrast between the different types of people.

Lastly in the same scene a slow motion is used to try and represent how the disabled boys mind is working, however this just adds effect and makes the audience feel sorrier for him.

First of all in the micro feature of camera an aerial shot is used by the cinematographer to show the audience the two main characters and to establish the setting of the clip. Then a medium close up is used to show the audience the main character talking about his brother, this shows his mid chest up to his head to show his facial expressions which presents how disgusted he is with what he is looking at. This is significant because it shows the audience what the older brother thinks of his younger brother. The cinematographer then uses a extreme close up to show how the other brother is disabled and isn’t actually dead like the diegetic is suggesting.

In the next scene an establishing shot is used to present to the audience that the family represents an ordinary working class family, due to the fact that they live in an ordinary council estate even if they live with a disability. Next an extreme close up is used to show the disabled boy eating and looking at his cereal, this is done by the cinematographer because it shows he isn’t showing many different facial expressions as he is very simple minded, also it shows the audience that one of the boys is disabled, however the camera is equal with his eyes which shows that he isn’t in this scene disregarded and disrespected because he is disabled, this is a good use of ideology because it shows how disabled people shouldn’t be discriminated against because of their disability. Furthermore a reaction shot is used to show the disabled brothers reaction to when the other brother says ‘he’s eaten all the Weetabix’ this is significant because even if the brother has a disability he is still capable to try and wind his brother up which is like a stereotypical pair of brothers would. The next shot is an over the shoulder shot because the brother is looking at his dad and the cinematographer tries to create this by the camera angle which is used, also the angle of camera is very low the cinematographer has done this so it makes it seem that the boy is looking up to his dad because he has respect for him like a stereotypical family would.

A three shot is used by the cinematographer because it shows the two brothers and a extra old man in the scene which is significant because it matches the diegetic and how the disabled brother has to be looked after in case someone tries to kidnap him.

Lastly an close up is used to show the audience the expression on the disabled boys face while he has to go home on his own, also the fact his hands are being shown is significant because it shows how he is gripping on for his life because of how scared he is.

The next feature of micro analysis is sound this is shown through either diegetic sounds or non-diegetic sounds.

First of all the non-diegetic in the first scene is a slow, down beat soundtrack which juxtaposes with one of the main characters diegetic because he is talking about death and how he had killed his brother which isn’t a happy and positive subject to be talking about so to really engage the audience the non-diegetic is very slow and down beat.  The diegetic of ‘were just a load of mixed up chemicals’ and ‘sometimes they do change the recipe’ which shows that the capable brother doesn’t think much of his disabled brother because he is just ‘ a big potato with eye tentacles’ which presents to the audience that the ordinary brother sees his disabled kind of like a alien because he is so different.  At the same time the diegetic is a song called ‘wouldn’t it be nice’ which is significant because it ‘s explaining how everything would be nice if everyone was grown up, which explains how Ben the ordinary brother feels because he thinks that once he grows up he wouldn’t have to look after his brother because he would be free.

The diegetic of the families mother is significantly calmer and more relaxed towards the disabled brother compared to what the Dad’s diegetic is towards Ben the ordinary brother which is significant because it shows how the disabled boy gets treated very different compared to the other boy as a result of his disabilities, which is unfair because they both should be treated the same as they are both brothers. Furthermore the fact the disabled boy says ‘I need a poo’ is significant because it shows how is very simple and represents the fact that he is mentally like a 5 year old which is a huge problem with disabilities such as this, also the scene where Ben says ‘they need someone with them all the time’ is significant because it explains to the audience how he can’t be left on his own no matter what the occasion.

In the last scene the non-diegetic again slows down and turns into a down beat tune, which juxtaposes with the sad moment where the disabled boy is left to fend for himself and could be prone to anything as he is more vulnerable than normal kids. Furthermore the non-diegetic is also of normal school kids swearing and talking loud to each other which again show’s the audience how the disabled boy is unusual and different because he is just sat there on his own rather than in a group which shows two binary opposites.

Overall the disabled boys diegetic is very simple and slower compared to every other characters in the scene because this helps the audience understand what his actual disabilities are and how they affect him with his day to day life, also It helps the audience engage with him because they can feel connected a lot more as a result of understanding him more.

Lastly during the scene of coming down the mountain, the micro feature of mise-en-scene is used to great effective to help show the representation of disability. For example in the very first scene in the brothers bedroom it is split in half for both boys, one half is dark, plain and dull which is for the fully capable boy, the other half is bright, colourful and busy which is the disabled boys half, this is a use of iconography because it attaches certain meanings such as disabled boys are allowed to like many different colours the way small children do whereas fully grown teenagers are only meant to like certain colours and stereotypically are very dull. Furthermore the fact the disabled brothers favourite cereal is important because it is Weetabix which is a soft easy cereal to eat and make which symbolises what his life is like because of his disability whereas when the other brother tries to have some of this he has to eat Aplen which is a more complex cereal which is significant because it can also represent how adults live because they try to be more complex through Alpen but become jealous when more simple people have less complex cereals such as Weetabix. Also in this scene the fact the disabled boy gets a kiss from his mum and the other brother doesn’t even get acknowledged is significant because it shows how the disabled boy gets a lot more attention from his parents compared to the more able brother. In the next scene the disabled boy is being taught how to ride a bike which juxtaposes with the other brother who is aiming to shoot him with a toy gun, this is represents the fact how his life would be a lot easier without a disabled brother however because it is a toy gun it shows how he is still a child. The fact the next scene is set in a ordinary school represents how the family are stereotypical because they go to a normal school and one of the brothers is a normal teenage boy with just a dream, however the only difference is they have a disabled brother.

Just as the brothers exchange money an explosion goes off which I feel symbolises the dangers which the disabled brother is going to be facing on the way home from school. Furthermore once the responsibility of looking after his disabled brother lifts from Ben the lighting instantly changes and goes a lot brighter because it shows how he would be much happier without him in his life.

Overall the clothes all the family members are wearing are very significant because they are all fairly tatty however they are all fairly normal which supports the fact that they are a stereotypical family with a normal life.

In conclusion I feel this clip of coming down the mountain is very good in showing the representational issue of disability. I feel that it was constructed in such a good way that disabled people aren’t offended however it allows the audience to see the huge difference between ordinary and disabled people. Furthermore the audience are able to understand what it is like dealing with a disabled person on a day to day basis through the use of all the micro features in this clip.

Editing of Coming down the moutain


Editing of Coming down the Mountain summer 2012 clip Representation of Disability.

First of all a long take is used and the cinematographer makes the camera fade in so the actual shot gradually and smoothly appears on the screen also the previous shot dissolves away to the next scene. Furthermore continuity editing is used which is connected to the diegetic because it tries to kind of recreate what has already happened.  This then moves on to a eye-line match to show the main character starring at his disabled brother which represents how much his brother is a burden and annoyance to him.

Linear narrative is used to present the audience with what is happening in the scene which is displayed through the use of montage editing which has juxtaposition of seemingly unconnected images to create a particular meaning and help support what is being said in the diegetic.

The next scene is set in the kitchen because it involves a stereotypical family eating their breakfast as it is a fairly slow paced scene it is viewed by the audience through a long take as the same shot is used for a long duration.  When action starts to happen in this scene such as the brother trying to reach for his brothers Weetabix the shot then speeds up through the use of a short take because the shot is only used by the cinematographer for a short period of time.  This signifies the early money rush that a stereotypical family would face however the editing speed is a lot slower when the disable boy is in the scene which tries to explain how he is unique and different compared to normal people.  

This next scene uses a cross cut to show the food and the two brothers talking about pigs and Ben telling his disabled brother about how they kill pigs. The editing technique of a jump cut is used by the cinematographer to show how the disabled brother tries to eat pork in a sausage and then gets put off it because of what his brother is saying which then ultimately builds tension before the dad steps in.

This scene is showing the audience the two boys at the bus stop waiting for the bus. It uses short takes for this so the audience views a range of different things which the disable brother does in a short period of time, this is a good use of montage editing by the editor because it shows a juxtaposition of unconnected images such as playing with toys which represents to the audience how annoying the disable boy is to his brother can be. Furthermore an eye line match is used to show Ben’s daily perspective on his disable brother which presents the audience with how annoying he is to his brother.

When the two boys are sat at the bus stop continuity editing is used to support the diegetic of one of brothers which is ‘being dragged off to an old pervs sex dungeon’ continuity editing is you used to try and give the audience a false impression about one of the minor characters in the scene.

In the next scene the speed of the scene is very slow which makes the audience the feel connected and are able to relate to the boy bored at the back of a history classroom, this represents how he is just a ordinary school boy, however when more action is used in the scene match on action is used to show the how continuity of space and time is being more emphasised.

In the scene of the boys talking about the party the match on action is very faced because this juxtaposes what the party will be like, however when the cameraman decided to point the camera at the disable brother the match on action decreases in speed which represents how boring the night would be if he decided to spend the night ‘babysitting’ his disabled brother.

When the disabled boy is on the bus a long take is used to show the audience his surroundings on the bus, as his calmly sat on the bus other kids his age are pushing, shoving, fighting and generally just being loud  which represents the difference between the types of people. He is scared and frightened of what might happen because of his disability whereas normal kids aren’t scared of anything. A cutaway is used to show a grown adult character sat on the bus; this is done again to show another huge contrast between the different types of people.

Lastly in the same scene a slow motion is used to try and represent how the disabled boys mind is working, however this just adds effect and makes the audience feel sorrier for him.
